Side Ancient City: Ruins, Theatre and Mediterranean Sunset

Set on a compact peninsula along the Manavgat coast, Side Ancient City blends archaeology with the Mediterranean in a way few destinations can match. Once an important port of ancient Pamphylia, Side preserves a theatre, agora, colonnaded streets, bath buildings and temples within the modern town.

What to see in Side

The ancient theatre is a strong place to begin. Its distinctive architecture combines a Hellenistic planning tradition with Roman construction techniques, revealing the scale and ambition of the former harbour city. Monumental gates and colonnaded streets continue through the archaeological landscape. Nearby, the Side Museum occupies a Roman agora bath and displays finds that add context to the ruins outside.

Walk toward the old harbour and you will reach the Temple of Apollo beside the sea. The surviving columns, part of a sacred area shared with the Temple of Athena, create Side’s most recognisable silhouette. Late afternoon is especially rewarding, when warm light settles on the stone and the Mediterranean horizon becomes part of the view.

Getting to Side from Antalya

Follow the D400 east from Antalya toward Manavgat, then take the signed turn for Side. Much of the historic centre is pedestrianised, so use designated parking and explore the peninsula on foot. Early mornings are cooler and quieter in summer. Before visiting, check current opening hours and ticket information through the official museum and archaeological-site channels.

Planning your visit

Allow several hours for the theatre, museum and main streets, then save the Temple of Apollo for sunset. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water, a hat and sun protection. Do not climb on ancient masonry or enter closed areas; protecting the exposed coastal remains is part of a responsible visit.

Side is not simply a single monument. Its walkable historic streets, sea views and changing light create a relaxed cultural day that feels distinct from Antalya’s beach routine.
